There’s a version of “palace hotel” that means restored heritage building and there’s a version that means built new but designed to feel like it’s always been there. The Leela Palace Udaipur is the second kind. The limestone walls, the jaalis, the chhatris on the skyline none of it is centuries old, but it’s detailed carefully enough that it doesn’t read as a copy either. Ivory marble runs through the public spaces and gold and red tones show up in the rooms alongside local artwork and hand knotted carpets.
The arrival matters more here than at most hotels. Guests are driven in by luxury sedan and then cross the last stretch of water by private boat a short ride, but the kind that resets the mood before anyone’s even checked in. From the lake side, the palace sits low against the water with the City Palace visible in the distance and the Aravalli hills behind it, which is the view most Leela weddings end up built around.
